About the role

The Diabetes Research Centre and NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre are looking to recruit a talented, motivated individual with expertise in exercise sciences, physical activity and health, to join an established, successful research team and play a key role in delivering cutting-edge research into the impact of physical activity, exercise and other lifestyle behaviours on health and wellbeing in people with long-term conditions such as obesity and diabetes.

Working closely with senior researchers and other members of the exercise laboratory team, the post will contribute to the delivery of research and other relevant activity within these facilities, including the coordination and delivery of research study visits, conducting various assessments of physical fitness, function and metabolic health with study participants, and designing and delivering lifestyle interventions including those containing structured aerobic and/or resistance exercise.

The appointed individual will be based at the Leicester Diabetes Centre (Leicester General Hospital), which is internationally recognised for its research in the prevention and management of obesity, diabetes and other long-term conditions, and also hosts the NIHR Leicester BRC and the NIHR Patient Recruitment Centre - Leicester.

The BRC Lifestyle Theme hosts an array of bespoke clinical research facilities, including a state-of-the-art exercise laboratory, and an expert team of exercise physiologists, research technicians and other supporting staff, to allow extensive exercise testing and training and other cardiometabolic health assessments.

The post holder will sit within a diverse multidisciplinary research team, working closely with clinical and non-clinical academics, technical support staff, research managers and administrators to deliver our portfolio of clinical research trials. This will focus most prominently within the BRC Lifestyle Theme to support research into the impact of physical activity and exercise in the prevention and management of various cardiometabolic conditions.

About you

In either role, the successful candidate will be a highly motivated, hardworking and enthusiastic individual, with expertise and experience in exercise/fitness testing and training. They will have excellent communication skills, a personable approach to working with members of the public and colleagues, the ability to give, receive and carry out instructions, and the ability to manage their own time and prioritise their own workload.

As a Grade 5 Senior Exercise Research Technician, you will play a senior role in coordinating and delivering activity within the exercise laboratory and associated research spaces, following existing processes and procedures. You will contribute to review and development of new and existing processes led by senior colleagues. You will also work closely with other members of the team, providing daily supervision to junior staff, students or visitors.

As a Grade 6 Lead Exercise Research Technician, you will play a lead role in coordinating the delivery of research and other activity within the exercise laboratory and associated spaces. This will include coordinating work across yourself and other members of the team. You will provide oversight to operations within these spaces, including leading the review of existing processes and procedures, and the development and implementation of new ones. You will provide daily supervision to users of these spaces, and line management to junior members of the team.
