University of Cambridge - Academic Division

Location: Cambridge
Salary: Competitive salary
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 28th February 2024
Closes: 10th March 2024
Job Ref: AK40645

The University of Cambridge is one of the world's leading academic centres. Our sustained pursuit of academic excellence is built on a long history of world-leading teaching and research within a distinctive collegiate system. To remain at the forefront of academic and research excellence, we must ensure that we have the people and processes in place to support our academic mission.

During a significant and exciting period of change for the University, we continue to seek ways in which we can further develop our offering to the world, responding to factors across the global Higher Education landscape.

With this in mind, we are seeking to appoint a Director of Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects, who will work with the University's senior leaders to deliver major cross-portfolio initiatives and special projects.

The Role

As Director of Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects, we will look to you to engage effectively with a variety of people and groups at all levels, both across the collegiate University and externally, to take forward a range of key initiatives.

The responsibilities of the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects will change depending on priorities at any one time. The two examples below provide an idea of the type of work you will be engaged in.  Over the longer term, you will be expected to identify, develop and progress other initiatives and ideas, to continue to improve the University's ability to deliver effectively on its mission.

Supporting the development of the draft Strategy on Climate and Environmental Sustainability:

You will have responsibility for co-ordinating the work which will ultimately result in the University's first institutional strategy on climate and environmental sustainability.  This strategy will be comprehensive, covering the University's academic endeavour and its operational activity.

You will develop an overview of all the activity, guiding and collating it into a coherent draft strategy by working with the academic and professional services leaders who are taking the various strands forward.

Developing a roadmap for 'non-traditional' education offerings at the University:

This piece of work will consider part-time study, online education, professional and executive education and similar, delineating the strategic basis for these, considering widening access, boosting revenues and increasing the impact of our educational offerings.  It will involve mapping existing activities, and working across the University to develop a future-facing plan that considers both opportunity and risk.

About you:

The ideal candidate for this role will join us with:

  • Recent and extensive experience operating at a senior level in the higher education sector.
  • Extensive experience of leading the development of strategies in a range of areas, convening and co-ordinating across different activities.
  • A flexible approach to delivery, with the ability to manage and deliver a broad range of activity simultaneously.
  • Ability to distil significant amounts of information, gathered orally and from written sources, and present it in a way that accessible to the intended audience.
  • A collaborative and diplomatic approach, with the ability to handle sensitive and/or contentious issues delicately, keeping relationships intact.
  • An outcome focussed approach, operating in the best interests of the University as a whole.
  • A willingness to 'do' as much as to manage and lead.

The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.
