The Fraser of Allander Institute (FAI) is seeking an experienced economist to lead the institute’s business analysis and engagement work. The Institute carries out regular commissioned research for partners in the private, public, and third sectors. For example, this often involves carrying out economic and wider impact assessments for businesses and industry bodies from Construction to Pharmaceuticals. The business lead is responsible for managing these projects, nurturing these partnerships, and fostering new relationships with businesses and industry bodies.

This role involves delivering economic updates to a range of clients from across different sectors. For example, this may involve providing an industry-specific update to inform an executive team’s business strategy or a general update on the Scottish economy at a conference.

The post also includes leading the FAI’s 25-year-old quarterly Scottish Business Monitor – one of Scotland’s leading business surveys. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the partnership with the survey’s sponsor, designing survey questions, sampling Scottish firms, cleaning and analysing large datasets of results, and disseminating key findings through reports, press releases, etc.

To be considered for the role, you will have a good honours degree and PhD / higher degree (or equivalent professional experience) in economics or a related discipline. You will have a personal track record working with a range of clients across a range of sectors, and experience nurturing and fostering relationships with these clients. You will have experience in business and industry analysis, and an interest in increasing the FAI’s capacity and profile in this research area. It is essential that you have the ability to translate technical economics terms into a way non-economists can understand. A background in private sector consultancy is desirable however, not required.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Joao Sousa Deputy Director, FAI (joao.sousa@strath.ac.uk).

Formal interviews for this post will be held on Monday, 22 April 2024.
