Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research

part-time 0.6 FTE, fixed term for 16 months

Salary on appointment will be £36,333 per annum (pro rata), with an annual increment up to £43,155 per annum (pro rata)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Associate to join the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research to contribute to a new EU project developing a cross-sectoral framework for socio-economic resilience to climate and extreme events in Europe (CROSS-EU). The post holder will be responsible for identifying, extracting and collating climate hazard and climate risk data to create a new harmonsied database for Europe. The database will be used within the wider project to assess climate and socio-economic risks in different regions and case studies and to enhance the modelling of mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience of independent research related to climate change, climate risk assessment or integrated assessment modelling, experience in managing and analysing large spatial datasets and experience in writing or modifying existing code to analyse, mine or aggregate spatial data. The tasks will involve identifying and extracting existing and relevant climate data from online resources (e.g. the C3S Climate Data Store and IPCC Interactive atlas) as well as processed model outputs (e.g. climate-related risks from existing EU projects such as PESETA and HELIX). The post holder will need to manipulate data to harmonise this into a single repository, building on the current framework used to create the Tyndall Centre’s Searchable Global Inventory of Climate Impacts. They will also lead a project survey to explore existing data available from within the consortium, identify remaining data needs, and include this data as needed. Excellent subject knowledge related to climate change, climate risk assessment, or integrated assessment modelling, and a familiarity with climate datasets will be a plus, as would experience in using GIS.

As a Senior Research Associate the post holder will be associated with the CROSS-EU project, working as part of a larger consortium to ensure the new database aligns with other work packages, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills. You will have a postgraduate level qualification, equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant research area. You will also have experience of independent research and have or be working towards publications in respected journals or equivalent within the field, and be able to work in a proactive and results driven manner.

This part-time (0.6 FTE) post is available from 1 May 2024 on a fixed term basis for 16 months.

We encourage applications from individuals who would prefer a flexible working pattern including annualised hours, compressed working hours, part time, job share, term-time only and/or hybrid working. Details of preferred hours should be stated in the personal statement and will be discussed further at interview.

Further information on our great benefits package, including 44 days annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays and additional University Customary days (pro rata for part-time), can be found on our benefits page.

Closing date: 22 March 2024
