The H. Walter Stern Scholarship aims to provide one new research student per year with the exceptional opportunity to work within their chosen research field to undertake a PhD programme at a world class research institution.
The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking to offer support to academically strong students from groups historically under-represented in science and engineering careers and the department, to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) degrees to diversify the talent pool through promoting participation and equal opportunity.
We are looking for an exceptional graduate student to be the recipient of the prestigious H. Walter Stern Scholarship. The research project can be in any area where the department is active (Catalysis & Reaction Engineering, Multiphase Systems, Electrochemical Engineering, Product & Process Systems Engineering, Molecular & Engineering Thermodynamics, Nature Inspired Chemical Engineering).

Studentship Description
The scholarship consists of fees equivalent to the standard postgraduate UK/home rate (2024/25: £6,035) plus a maintenance stipend (2024/25: £21,181) for full-time study (benefits are calculated 'pro rata' for part-time students). The scholarship also includes additional research costs of up to £1,200 per year for the stated duration of the programme plus a one-off conference cost of £1000.
Awards are normally tenable for years 1, 2, and 3 of a full-time MPhil/PhD/EngD degree programme (or years 1-5 of a part-time programme), subject to annual review and renewal.
Where students are undertaking integrated four-year doctoral programmes the award will be extended to the final year of study.
If granted, funding begins at the start of the next academic year.

Person Specification
The candidate will have or be expected to obtain a 2.1 degree from a UK MEng level programme or its overseas equivalent in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics or an associated discipline. The ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment that tackles questions across various fields of Chemical Engineering is expected.
