Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Laboratory Manager to join us at Imperial College London in the Division of Digestive Diseases, which is part of the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction. Your role will be to provide support to Section & Division heads as well as Principle Investigators in the management of their labs and in executing their Health and Safety responsibilities.

You will be a member of the Department’s Health &Safety compliance team, carrying out inspections of labs across the various areas and campuses within the department. 

Duties and responsibilities

You will be managing general laboratory stocks, planning and monitoring budgets as well as arranging purchases of laboratory equipment. There may also be some managerial duties such as supervising laboratory aides and assisting with the recruitment of technical staff.  

  • Planning and organisation of facilities in conjunction with academic staff to ensure smooth running of the labs.
  • Manage general laboratory stocks of chemicals and consumables including assisting with rotas for ordering general laboratory chemicals/supplies, consumables, lab coats, liquid nitrogen and gases when necessary.
  • Help plan and monitor budgets as well as submission of recharges for general lab purchases.
  • Help MDR staff and students comply with relevant regulations relating to sending/receiving biological and hazardous material.
  • Arrange the purchase of laboratory equipment; liaise with suppliers; arrange best quotes, arranging appropriate warranty and service packages for new equipment etc.
  • Arranging equipment service contracts, repairs, and management of lab equipment.
  • Coordinate service visits and repairs of communal lab equipment for different laboratories in the Division (and across Campuses if required).
  • Manage alarm systems for -80oC freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks, keeping callout lists up to date.
  • Manage organisation and tidying of communal spaces.
  • Line manage / supervise laboratory technicians / assistants if required.
  • Assist with the recruitment of new technical staff.
  • Liaise with the Estates Department regarding building repairs.

Essential requirements

  • Applicants must hold a BSc degree in a biological or medical subject, or equivalent and should have experience on management of Health and Safety.
  • Experience in managing staff is essential as well as experience of laboratory management. Other essential requirements include:
    • Practical experience with a broad range of laboratory equipment
    • Scientific knowledge and technical ability
    • Knowledge of health and safety regulations
    • Competence in Microsoft Office applications including SharePoint
    • Presentation skills – ability to present information to groups of people verbally and using power point.
  •  Self-motivated and adaptable with the ability to exercise initiative and work independently or as part of a team. Good organisational skills are a must.

This is a full time 35 (h/pw) and open ended role based in based in the  Hammersmith Campus and St Mary’s Campuses of Imperial College London.
