Job Summary

In lower-income settings in sub-Saharan Africa there are fundamental questions which have potentially enormous consequences for the health and wellbeing of populations: How should a country decide which effective interventions to offer as part of its healthcare service provision and which must it forgo if it is to maximise health and reduce health inequalities? What health benefit would accrue if more funding were to be made available?

Addressing these questions is hard because it requires a detailed understanding of the many and varied health challenges and healthcare options that exist. At the same time, a very high value is placed by decision-makers on approaches that can help inform such crucial decisions.

As part of the Thanzi La Onse (“Health for All”) programme, we are embarking on a new project – Thanzi La Mawa – which is funded by The Wellcome Trust and will directly address these questions. The Research Fellow would join a strong, multidisciplinary term of epidemiologists, economists, healthcare system specialists and research software engineers over a three year project. The overall approach is the development of a uniquely detailed individual-based simulation model in tandem with analyses of epidemiological, healthcare system and financial data. This is an opportunity to break new ground in healthcare system modelling and health-economics, working across many diseases and geographies to produce innovative new analyses, and to contribute to the sustainable use of such approaches in the following years.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will be a member of a large multidisciplinary team with primary responsibility for addressing the major research questions at the core of this project.
  • You will develop and analyse the TLO model, alongside the analysis of epidemiological and healthcare system data, to find:
  1. a) the effect that different types of policy change could have on health equity;
  2. b) the potential effect that climate change could have (in particular through increased frequency of extreme events that can disrupt or impair healthcare service delivery);
  3. c) the relative merits of different forms of restructuring of healthcare provision.

Essential requirements

Further particular requirement include:

  • PhD or equivalent in one of the following areas: mathematical modelling, statistics, infectious disease epidemiology or related subject or a similar quantitative discipline
  • Programming skills in Python; or, experience in at least one of C, C++, Java, R, Matlab and willingness to learn Python.
  • Experience in working with epidemiological or healthcare (or similar) data, including data cleaning, validation, summarise description, and appropriate analysis using standard techniques (e.g. general linear modelling, imputation, estimation, etc.).

Further Information

This is a full time (35h/pw) and fixed -term contract (24 months) based at the White City Campus.

Please note that this is a Research Fellow/Associate post and Salary ranges are 17-21 (Associate), 20-24 (Fellow)

For informal enquiries, please contact Prof. Timothy Hallett timothy.hallett@imperial.ac.uk

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
