Job Summary

We are seeking a talented epidemiologist or quantitative public health researcher who is familiar with analysis and interpretation of population-based cohort studies, and preferably with previous experience from working in cancer epidemiology, to join the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Imperial College London. This is a 30% position for three years. The post will include analyses of large-scale observational cohort studies including the UK Biobank, Cohort of Swedish Men and Swedish Mammography Cohort. The research will focus on the association between different domains of physical activity and cancer risk, with a particular aim of clarifying these associations across a range of cancers to provide a more comprehensive assessment of the evidence. In addition, modern mediation analyses will be used to explore potential underlying mechanistic pathways using available biomarkers and potentially intermediate disease endpoints as mediators.

The project is funded by the World Cancer Research Fund and led by Dr. Dagfinn Aune. The post-holders will be part of an international and multi-disciplinary research group including cancer epidemiologists, biologists, and statisticians with researchers based at Imperial College London, University of Bristol and Karolinska Institute. The post-holders will be expected to present the results at departmental seminars, and at national and international conferences.

Duties and responsibilities

The main duties of the post-holder include:

  • To work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary research team
  • To conduct and interpret statistical analyses on analyses of physical
  • activity and cancer risk, including mediation analyses
  • Prepare manuscripts and submit/publish manuscripts in high impact journals
  • Present data at department meetings and at national and international meetings
  • Prepare progress reports to the funding organisation

Essential requirements

  • You should hold a PhD (for appointment to Research Associate) or Master's level qualification (for appointment to Research Assistant) in one of the following areas: epidemiology, sports science, nutrition, statistics or public health (quantitative).
  • Strong statistical skills, experience and knowledge of programming in Stata, and familiarity with the analysis and interpretation of population-based cohort studies is desirable. Ideally the candidate would also have some knowledge of mediation analyses and experience in working with big data.

Further Information

The post is part-time (30%) until the end date of the grant on 31st July 2027 and is based at the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health at St. Mary's Campus, Paddington.

Candidates who have not been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 - £43,888 per annum.

For further information and a formal discussion contact Dr Dagfinn Aune (d.aune@imperial.ac.uk).

Hybrid working may be considered for this role.  Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
