Location: Leeds
Salary: £45,585 to £54,395 per annum (Grade 8)
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 8th March 2024
Closes: 9th April 2024
Job Ref: EPSCH1098

Are you passionate about a fundamental understanding of processes within Earth’s atmosphere, which control, for example, climate change, air quality and the impact of renewable fuels? Do you have a strong background in atmospheric science and want to be part of a cutting-edge research and teaching team? If so, the University of Leeds has an exciting opportunity for you to join us as a Lecturer in Chemistry of a Changing Atmosphere.

The University of Leeds is an internationally leading institution at the forefront of innovative research and education in Chemistry and adjacent disciplines. Our vision is to deliver innovative research and distinctive education programmes that align with the most pressing issues facing global society, and to help realise a sustainable and healthy future for all. We are now seeking to recruit four new academic staff who will lead research programmes aligned with these pressing challenges; and contribute to our taught undergraduate and postgraduate education programmes that focus on chemistry and addressing global challenges.

The identification of solutions to combat climate change and the health impacts of air pollution requires a fundamental understanding of the chemical processes in Earth’s atmosphere taking place in the gas-phase, condensed/liquid phase and at interfaces. In the Atmospheric, Planetary and Theoretical Chemistry (APTC) group in chemistry our approach is to tackle this challenge using a combination of fieldwork, laboratory (including chamber) and theoretical studies, and numerical modelling. Much of our research is performed as part of collaborative teams encompassing the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures. Our researchers have access to world-leading experimental and analytical facilities, both in our laboratories (e.g. kinetics and chamber studies) and on national and international observational platforms (e.g. AMOF and FAAM) to understand the fundamentals of chemical processing taking place from the Earth’s surface to the edge of space.

We are now seeking to recruit a Lecturer who will use an experimental approach to understand the fundamentals of chemical processes within Earth’s atmosphere. This may involve basic research and applications of the kinetics, dynamics, and spectroscopy of species within reactive media in the gas and condensed phases or at interfaces.

In addition to completing the online application form, your application should include:

  • A two-page statement which presents a compelling vision for research and research led teaching;
  • Your Curriculum Vitae giving full details of qualifications and experience.

This role will be based at the university of Leeds campus and there is scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
