Research Fellow

University of Aberdeen - School of Engineering

Location: Aberdeen
Salary: £37,099
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 12th March 2024
Closes: 9th April 2024
Job Ref: ENG222R

This post-doc position is part of a large multi-institution NERC-funded research project titled: Gravel barrier resilience in a changing climate (#gravelbeach). The project will deliver new scientific advances on gravel barrier dynamics over different time- and spatial scales, based on intense field observations, targeted laboratory experiments, and numerical model development/simulation. The enhanced understanding will be implemented into numerical tools capable of modelling barrier morphodynamics over timescales relevant to coastal managers, ranging from storms, through seasons and decades, to centuries, thereby improving sustainable coastal management methods, and increasing coastal resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change.

The post-doc position will be based in the Fluid Mechanics Research Group in the School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen. The Group’s Fluid Mechanics Laboratory houses several major research facilities to support key areas in fluvial and coastal research, including the 20m long dam-break swash facility, which will be used for the present research. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art optical (PIV, LDA) and acoustic (Ubertone UB Lab-2C, Nortek ADV) instrumentation for flow velocity and sediment concentration measurements, instruments to measure surface water levels and subsurface pressure bed profilers, and several high-speed cameras for multi-purpose use. In addition to the experiments in Aberdeen, the post-doc will also spend a period of time in Plymouth to conduct wave flume experiments with project partners in the University of Plymouth’s COAST laboratory.

Salary will be at Grade 6, £37,099 per annum and will last until 2 December 2026.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Dominic van der A, Lecturer in Engineering, e-mail:  d.a.vandera@abdn.ac.uk
