Job Summary

­­­The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London, is seeking a Workshop Technician to join its Research Design and Manufacturing facility.

Supporting the ground-breaking research undertaken across the Departments Academic disciplines, the RDM Workshop team is a key component in our research having real-world impacts on commercial, medical and environmental endeavours. With over 50 Academics and more than 280 research staff and students working on a range of topics from medical implants & surgical techniques to new-age engine & fuel technologies, the demand for manufacturing high-quality components has never been higher!

The postholder will work within the RDW Workshop liaising with Senior Workshop and Laboratory Technicians, Academics, Researchers and suppliers to provide a comprehensive machining service. They will use their knowledge of traditional and modern engineering techniques to interpret project designs for fabrication.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • You will be working as part of the Department’s Research Design and Manufacturing Workshop team to provide machining and traditional engineering support for our groundbreaking research.
  • You will engage with Academics and Researchers to interpret and provide feasible design solutions for components, sub-assemblies, and whole assemblies.
  • You will produce and interpret engineering drawings in CAD format.
  • You will produce CNC code from CAM packages

Members of our Technical Services team are provided support to build on & expand the skills gained during formal training, to help you develop and progress as an early-career engineering technician. This includes opportunities to connect and learn in the wider Department technical facilities and networks.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • You need to have completed a recognised apprenticeship / HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), and have an NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant accredited workplace.
  • You will have experience of traditional engineering machines, principals and techniques including in hand tools.
  • You will be able to use CNC machines and Wire EDM machines, and understand their applications.
  • You must be able to demonstrate an appreciation of health & safety in a workshop environment.
