Job description 

Overall purpose 

The postholder will focus on providing specialist support for students with disabilities and specific learning differences (SpLDs), in addition to general advice to the wider student population. As part of a team of professional support staff, the postholder with work closely with the Head of Student Supprt, academic and professional services to provide effective and integrated services to students and specialist advice to teaching staff.

Disability inclusion support at Regent College involves advising and assisting students with disabilities or differing abilities, whether they require reasonable adjustments, specialist equipment, or general guidance. The aim of this support is to foster inclusivity by engaging with students of varying abilities and traits that may affect their studies, ensuring all students can participate fully in their educational experience. This approach aims to remove barriers and provide tailored support to meet individual needs across a diverse student population.

Specific duties and responsibilities 

  1. Provide specialist advice, guidance, and support to disabled & students with long-term medical conditions and mental health conditions.
  2. Develop plans and reasonable adjustments in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
  3. Reduce and remove barriers to accessing learning and teaching for disabled students.
  4. Read and understand diagnostic assessments with the objective of determining the technical and human support study needs of a student with a disability and/or SpLDs.
  5. Construct written reports of equipment/services, costs and potential suppliers that students need
  6. Demonstrate a range of suitable assistive technology and specialist software that students need
  7. Keep up-to-date with all relevant legislation, policies and updates relating to disabilities, government funding (DSA), equipment and software, higher education and support strategies.
  8. Participate in Continuous Professional Development to ensure that each assessment report reflects an indepth and up-to-date knowledge and awareness of enabling technology hardware, software, support strategies, policies and relevant legislation.
  9. Working with academic and professional/specialist support staff to develop and deliver a programme of events and activities to support both applicants to the institute and students in relation to wellbeing and mental health.
  10. Ensure compliance with guidelines and regulations related to disability support services and Regent College London’s partners.
  11. Contribute to the overall improvement of disability support services within RCL. 

Person Specification 

  • A degree in a relevant field such as Disability Studies, Psychology, Education, Social Work, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working directly with students with disabilities, specific learning differences (SpLDs), mental health conditions, and long-term medical conditions.
  • Proven track record of providing specialist advice, guidance, and support to disabled students.
  • Experience in developing and implementing reasonable adjustments and support plans.
  • Familiarity with Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) applications and procedures.
  • Knowledge of a range of assistive technologies and specialist software used to support students with disabilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports and documentation.
  • Full understanding and commitment to upholding Data Protection and GDPR regulations.
  • Ability to work flexibly is a requirement of this role; and you will be part of a rota that operates from 9am-6pm across weekdays; occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
