Background
The University of Birmingham’s College of Arts & Law is home to five schools and a broad range of academic disciplines across the arts and humanities. With £10 million of research funding every year, we need a curious, enthusiastic and proactive Communications Officer to help us unearth and tell the great stories about our academics and their ground-breaking work.
Role Summary
Working under the direction of the Research Communications Manager, this post is responsible for the development and implementation of communications and events plans for the College of Arts & Law to grow the reputation and profile of the College, its areas of expertise and its academics.
Experienced in both digital and offline activity, the post-holder will work closely with colleagues to deliver a flexible and innovative approach across the broad spectrum of communications. The post-holder will manage and implement multiple projects across research communications, public engagement, policy impact, events, and profile-raising.
The Communications Officer will work collaboratively with key staff to develop key strategic relationships with and for the College. As part of the College’s Marketing and Communications team, the post holder will also take a lead role in College-wide initiatives, as required and as directed by the Research Communications Manager and Head of Marketing and Communications, and will also work closely with the University’s wider External Relations team.
Person Specification
With considerable experience of working in a marketing and/or communications environment, you’ll have a track record of juggling a busy workload to tight deadlines and be confident at translating complex information to a lay audience in an engaging way. Excellent writing skills, good attention to detail and a ‘can-do’ approach to taking on a variety of projects – from occasional filming and press liaison to events support and internal stakeholder management – are also essential.
While often working independently, you’ll have the constant support of a small and friendly team to help problem-solve and bounce ideas off, as well as a working culture that encourages you to develop your skills and pursue your interests within the role.
