Job Summary

Applications are invited for an NIHR Imperial BRC-funded position of Post-Doctoral Research Associate. You will join the NIHR Imperial BRC’s Social Genetic and Environmental Determinants of Health (SGE)Theme (NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre – Translating research into patient benefits), to address the core aim of determining how genetic risk, interpreted in the context of relevant environmental and social contexts, can be translated into improved care through precision-medicine.  You will specifically join the Centre for Haematology, Department of Immunology and Inflammation, to investigate interactions of genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors with erythropoiesis and its microenvironment that impact the biology and treatment of Diamond-Blackfan anaemia (DBA). The work will be co-supervised by Dr Deena Iskander, Professor Anastasios Karadimitris and Professor Josu de la Fuente. The DBA group at Imperial have made significant contributions in the understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of DBA. A large part of the work is based on the use of primary blood and bone marrow samples available through the largest DBA clinical service in the UK, led by Prof de la Fuente and Dr D Iskander, based at Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust.

We are looking to recruit a skilled, reliable, and enthusiastic Research Associate, preferably with previous research experience in the field of erythropoiesis. You will have responsibility for all aspects of the day-to-day co-ordination, running and maintenance of the projects. This will include conducting scientific work and data analyses, as well as preparing data for publication and grant writing.

You must be organised, highly self-motivated and have excellent communication, interpersonal and computer skills. You will need to manage your time and performance, must be strongly proactive, knowledgeable and able to solve complex problems.

Duties and responsibilities

Essential requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled, reliable and well organised Research Associate who shares our excitement about the research we do.

  • You should possess a PhD in Cell or Stem Cell biology or an equivalent subject.
  • You should have experience with cellular and molecular assays pertinent to haematopoiesis/erythropoiesis and good knowledge and application of molecular biology techniques such as molecular cloning, qPCR gene editing and multiparameter flow cytometry.
  • Experience with transcriptomics and epigenetic assays and relevant computational skills will be desirable.
  • The ability to conduct a concise review of recent literature and the ability to develop and apply new concepts is essential. In addition, you will have excellent communication skills, the ability to solve problems, and the ability to work both on your own initiative and as a member of a team.

Further Information

This is a full-time, fixed term post for 24 months based at the Hammersmith Campus (East Acton).

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 - £43,888 per annum.
