Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the vibrant city. We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Data Analyst (Student Data and Returns) to join our dynamic team within the Planning and Performance Department. 

The Data Analyst (Student Data and Returns) is responsible for supporting student data quality assurance to ensure that BCU student statutory returns are accurate, timely and comply with the latest requirements defined by the regulatory body. 

The post holder will develop a comprehensive understanding of the portfolio of work undertaken by the Planning and Performance Department and will be given opportunities to work across a variety of tasks within the department in response to business need and prioritisation of work across the academic year.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develop diagnostic reporting to highlight data quality issues in student record system.
  • Work closely with colleagues in Academic Services and faculties to resolve data quality issues, ensuring that records are compliant with regulatory guidelines.
  • Support compilation and assurance of student number statutory returns including Data Futures Student Return and Annual Offshore Return. 
  • Liaise with the Higher Education Statistics Agency, Office for Students and other Designated Data Bodies and Professional Bodies as required, including providing supporting data to inform responses to queries generated as part of the statutory return process.  
  • Work with others in the team to support the development and specification of requirements for data warehouse solutions.   
  • Provide business intelligence and management reporting on student populations to support high level reporting to boards and committees.  
  • Produce and maintain clear documentation of all processes undertaken.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in a numerate subject.
  • Excellent analytical ability and experience of working with large complex datasets.  
  • Experience of advanced Excel and BI tools such as Tableau and PowerBI.   
  • Good interpersonal and team-working skills.         
  • Highly organised with ability to stick to deadlines.
