This is a fixed term appointment for two years with extension subject to further funding.

As part of its work with the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action, the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment (GRI) is supporting a major new global effort to support finance ministries in improving economic analysis and modelling to drive climate leadership. Finance ministries are raising daunting economic questions around the actions needed to drive a sustainable transition, but many of the economic tools of today are not able to answer some of the most important questions countries are facing.

This new post will play an important role in leading a new project co-chaired by the United States Department of the Treasury and the Danish Ministry of Finance with many other finance ministries as part of the Coalition of Finance Ministers. This project aims to bring finance ministries together with economists, economic analysis and modelling teams, and other experts to produce a major flagship report and wider programme of work to significantly close the gap between decision-maker needs and current practices. This project will be complemented by wider activities building on GRI’s work in coordinating the Coalition’s flagship guide to climate action.

The Policy Fellow will lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of the new initiative in partnership with colleagues. They will oversee and conduct rigorous research & policy work on economic analysis / modelling to influence decisions of finance ministries and other decision makers. They will build relationships with finance and economic policy ministries, international financial institutions, and academic / research organisations. They will deliver a range of research-based policy-relevant outputs. They will identify key topics relevant for finance ministries. They will participate, if needed, in country visits to finance ministries in other countries, and support project plans, budgets, and fund-raising proposals.

Candidates will have a Masters degree or equivalent in economics, development economics, sustainable finance, management, law or a closely related field. Candidates should have strong knowledge of economic, fiscal, and financial policy, and related climate policy matters. They should have a strong publication track record, and experience of engaging with or working within economic and finance ministries, and of working in / managing a team of researchers / policy analysts. Experience in emerging markets and developing countries would be an added advantage, as would experience using and / or leading economic analysis and modelling for climate action.

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent training and development opportunities.
