DC Microgrids (MG) can connect various renewable generators and energy storage and play a vital role in the goal of reaching Net Zero.

The overall management of a DC MG relies on reliable communication and information flow between power electronic interfaces. Dual modulation of power and data is an emerging technology for DG MGs, where data is transmitted on the same cables used for power transmission. This provides a high reliability but low-cost communication solution that meets high real-time performance needs.

The research will focus on modelling of power electronic converters, DC MG analysis from both power electronics and communication perspectives, control and management of DC MGs, and simulations/experiments for verification and optimization.

This project provides an exciting opportunity for a successful candidate to explore the interdisciplinary area of power electronics, communication and control. The Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) at Loughborough University will also provide multidisciplinary support with advanced laboratories and equipment for renewable generation and energy storage.

The studentship is for 3 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £18,622 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees (the rate for 24/25 has not yet been published by the UKRI).
