The opportunity

As a Lab Manager you will provide effective and efficient management of the labs and equipment to facilitate the support of high-quality teaching, work-based learning, and research and innovation activities within the area of Biomechanics. You will be responsible for a small team of technical staff and ensure appropriate technical support is available for teaching, work-based learning, research, and innovation projects.

You will be an exceptional, suitably qualified individual who is able to prepare and assist academic staff with demonstrations and support practical activities; this will include video and audio footage collection and gathering of sports material on campus or off campus. It is essential that you have a significant grasp of the academic Learning and Teaching & Research and Innovation), technical and/or professional nature of Biomechanics and can communicate this with clarity. 

What we are looking for

  • Postgraduate qualification in Biomechanics or relevant discipline.
  • Experience of providing sport biomechanics support and managing Health and Safety in the labs and associated areas.
  • Knowledge of Sport biomechanics equipment including appropriate computer hardware and software packages for data collection (Vicon Nexus, CodaMotion, Qualysis, or similar) and data analysis (Visual 3, Matlab, MathCAD or similar)
  • Ability to undertake operational management of the facility through the day-to-day line management of the technical support staff.
  • Experience in managing the budget allocation and ensure that value for money is achieved and service contracts are re-negotiated.
  • Ability to lead a team, planning and prioritising work to ensure that objectives are met.
  • Ability to oversee and develop all training for staff and students working in the labs; instructing, supervising, and managing the technical team, including those supported by externally generated funding.
  • Ability to identify areas for improvement and to use initiative and problem-solving skills to improve performance.
  • Ability to mentor and supervise staff and students operating in the facility, working in collaboration with academic staff.
  • Ability to timetable, plan and implement lab activities, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of lab function in pursuit of approved academic and innovation objectives. Co-ordinate the biomechanics space.
  • Ability to explore and evaluate new technology to enhance current practice to support academic / research staff and students on the innovative use and application of the use of techniques, equipment and processes.
  • Discuss student progress with academic staff. Provide feedback to academic staff on a student’s ability to progress and their skill level.
