Location: Reading
Salary: £33,966 to £39,347 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th March 2024

The University of Reading is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and ambitious researcher to work on thermal remote sensing of the North Atlantic and Arctic region. The first six months of this post will focus on ocean calibration requirements for a new small-satellite constellation making observations over the UK at high spatial (100 m) and temporal (3-hourly) resolution. This concept study will investigate the feasibility of using multi-angled high-resolution observations for the monitoring of coastal temperatures.  The remaining 18 months of this post will focus on thermal remote sensing of the northern Atlantic, using satellite data to track the inter-annual variability of the Arctic ice extent, latitude of the Gulf Stream, and thermal indicators of ocean circulation. This research will be coupled with modelling studies to provide key insights into changes in UK weather and climate over the coming decades.

You will have:

  • An interest in observing the Earth by remote sensing and advancing climate science.
  • Numeracy skills and confidence working with data.
  • Experience in research (PhD or equivalent attainment) in a numerical subject e.g. physics, maths, meteorology, environmental science.
  • Personal skills to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Confidence in communicating findings within the research community

You will work with a team of scientists within the world-class Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading and will be a part of the National Centre for Earth Observation: a network of scientists across the UK, seeking to understand the Earth from space. You will also work with scientists from a range of UK science centres including the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and the British Antarctic Survey to provide a more holistic overview of the changing climate of the North Atlantic and UK. This post is part of the Climate Change in the Arctic and North Atlantic Region and Impacts on the UK (CANARI) project: https://canari.ac.uk.
