About Gower College Swansea

Putting learners at the heart of everything we do

Could you support us in leading the way in education and training for the communities we serve?

Gower College Swansea is looking for talented and dedicated people to join its Corporation Board.

As a Governor, you would be part of an ambitious organisation at an exciting time of further growth and development.

One of the largest further education colleges in Wales, Gower College Swansea operates with over 4,500 full time and 8,000 part time learners – including 3,000 apprentices - from across the city and neighbouring counties studying each year.

Today, the College runs from six locations across Swansea, including campuses at Tycoch and Gorseinon, and is one of the largest employers in the region with over 1,000 staff with an annual turnover of just under £60m.

The College offers almost 40 different A Level choices and a wide range of vocational subject areas for school leavers, in addition to apprenticeships and higher education courses. It also boasts sector-led business-to-business training to individuals and employers across the region in England and Wales, as well as tailored employability support.

The College is going from strength to strength and the past 12 months alone have seen some incredible achievements, including:

  • Continuing academic success across A Levels – our overall pass rate in 2023 was 98% and ten of our students have received offers for Oxford and Cambridge in September 2024
  • A massive success too for our vocational students in both Skills Competition Wales (30 medals won in 2023) and Worldskills (six of our students made the national finals)
  • Winning the prestigious Association of Colleges Beacon Award for Widening Participation.
  • Celebrating our HR team, who were honoured with the prestigious Best Health and Wellbeing Initiative Public/ Third Sector 2023 award by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
  • Securing a Stonewall Bronze Award
  • Retaining our Corporate Health Standards Gold Award.

To continue to develop, we rely on the dedication of our committed team of Governors who help us work towards both our short- and long-term goals.

What is the role of a Governor?

As a Governor, you would play an active part in the life of the College, and will be invited to attend our celebratory events throughout the year which showcase the incredible success of our learners.

The Board meets seven times a year and our meetings start at 5pm lasting for around 2 hours. Once a year we organise a strategic awayday and Governors are invited to attend for training and an opportunity to discuss the strategic direction of the College. Governors are also responsible for the overseeing the appointment of the Chief Executive, Principal and Clerk.

The Governor role, which is a voluntary position, requires a time commitment of around four or five hours per month. During this time, we would ask that you review reports and attend Board and Committee meetings. Much of the work of the Board is carried out in a hybrid format and members are given support to maximise their contribution either in person or online.

What are the benefits?

In exchange for your invaluable contribution, there are a number of benefits to becoming a Governor.

Understanding how a FE college operates will help you to develop a deeper insight into the education sector, and provide you with an opportunity to have a tangible impact on the communities that we serve.

For those people in the early stages of their career, being a Governor can be a perfect way to help you develop leadership and influencing skills and gain unique insights into governance and management, all of which are invaluable for career progression.

Being on the Board can be an enriching experience that contributes to personal growth and professional development offering you:

  • Leadership and governance training
  • Networking with professionals across various industries
  • A platform to advocate for educational excellence and community engagement.

The College wants to encourage the involvement from all parts of our community. We highly welcome applications from people from underrepresented backgrounds or communities as we strive, not only diversify the Board, but also enrich decision-making with a broad spectrum of perspectives.

Members of the Board really can and do make a difference. It is a challenging and interesting role that will give you an opportunity to get involved and make a positive contribution to your community

Concerned about the time commitment? Talk to the Clerk, you might prefer to become a co-opted member to a committee of the Board or to attend Board meetings with a watching brief with a view to understanding if you would be able to join us in future. We currently have eight committees, covering a range of activity. Our committees meet between three and five times a year for around two hours.

The Clerk is happy to answer your queries or set up an informal chat with the CEO, Principal, Chair, or any current Governor to talk through this opportunity.

Being a governor can be a very rewarding role and we are keen to support you.
