The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) and the Faculty of Social Sciences at The University of Sheffield wish to recruit a Senior Lecturer in AI and In/Equality.

The CMI is a strategic initiative supported by a £3.64m investment, dedicated to the transformation and acceleration of research, innovation, and teaching on and with AI. This position is one of four academic theme lead appointments. The successful applicant will lead the Human-Centric AI theme.

You will work across the CMI and the Faculty of Social Sciences Social Research Institute for the first three years of the post, after which you will join a Social Science School appropriate to your disciplinary background and expertise. The Social Research Institute is a physical hub of social science research centres and networks, including the ESRC Digital Good Network, the Urban Institute, iHuman, the Healthy Lifespan Institute and the Centre for Care. You will have the opportunity to engage with these centres and networks to develop a programme of research.

Concern about AI bias and discrimination and a commitment to developing responsible and trustworthy AI underlies much of the current global policy and scholarly debate about AI. These issues are central to the Human-Centric AI theme and to the mission of the CMI. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your career and lead an important stream of work within a major centre for AI research.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field of the social sciences and experience of interdisciplinary collaboration, especially with STEM disciplines. You will have the skills to provide leadership in AI and in/equality and to work with other theme leads and the Centre Director to ensure that the CMI is at the forefront of AI research, innovation, and impact, nationally and internationally.

Your teaching load during the first three years of this position will be a maximum of 20% allocated workload, to ensure that you have capacity for leadership activities. The position is supported by a PhD studentship (UK fees and stipend for 3.5 years) and a generous start-up package for travel and equipment.

This position is available from 1 July 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
