Salary: £40,521 to £56,021 per annum depending on relevant experience
Hours: Full Time

This is an exciting opportunity to develop cross-disciplinary teaching and scholarship in Sustainability in the School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED). This lectureship is a core investment in SEED’s plans to embed sustainability in the curriculum for students across our five disciplines, through developing cross-School teaching on sustainability that draws upon expertise across our five disciplines, Architecture, Education, Geography, Global Development, and Planning, Property and Environmental Management. The successful candidate will be situated in the department most aligned to their expertise, but will substantively work across SEED in this endeavour.

SEED’s five disciplines have particular strengths in fields related to sustainability, including:

  • Sustainability education
  • Climate change and adaptation
  • Sustainable development, social justice, and the global south
  • Urban ecology, green infrastructure, and adaptive reuse
  • Environmental management and nature restoration
  • Environmental governance, monitoring, modelling, and reconstruction

SEED has made significant advances in the above fields, including internal and large external grant funding, successful existing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and the development of new cross-disciplinary programmes (e.g., MSc Nature Recovery, Restoration and Rewilding; MSc Green Infrastructure; MA Architecture and Adaptive Reuse; MA Education for a Sustainable Environment; MSc Climate Change: Science, Society and Solutions; BSc Global Development). SEED sustainability research, scholarship  and teaching also makes significant contributions across the University of Manchester, and our activity connects with the Sustainable Consumption Institute, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change, and Sustainable Futures.

Alongside contributing to scholarship within one of SEED’s five disciplines, the successful candidate will work closely with SEED senior leadership to develop cross-disciplinary teaching and scholarship opportunities in the area of sustainability. Applications are welcome from appropriately qualified candidates in any of the five disciplinary area of SEED, but with a particular focus on an appointment that can strengthen cross-disciplinary teaching and scholarship in Sustainability.

SEED prides itself on providing a collegial, friendly and supportive multi-disciplinary environment. This derives from working in a successful research and teaching institution with a global reputation; by interacting regularly with students from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds; from the high level of assistance provided by professional support staff; from working on real-world issues of importance to society; from the ability to identify and develop personal interests and priorities; from opportunities for professional and leadership development (through internal qualifications and externally through Advance HE); and by contributing to the SEED’s collective goals and ambitions to address key issues of social justice, inequalities and sustainable development.
