Nazarbayev University is an English-medium university established in Kazakhstan in 2010. In its first entry in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2023, it ranked 500-600 in the world, confirming its position in the top 30% of universities globally after only 13 years of existence.  The Graduate School of Education (GSE), which was launched in 2013, ranked 250-300 in the 2023 subject rankings. GSE offers programmes at Master’s and PhD level, and our alumni lead education reform across the education sector in Kazakhstan and beyond.

GSE invites applications for an Academic English Instructor beginning in August 2024. The position is based in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Academic English Instructors support our students in our three postgraduate, English-medium, research-integrated programs: M.Sc. in Educational Leadership; M.A. in Multilingual Education; and Ph.D. in Education. Academic English Instructors teach online and offline, working collaboratively with GSE academic faculty, teaching in scheduled Academic English courses, and providing tutorial writing support. 

Qualified educators interested in working with highly motivated and accomplished students in an innovative, collaborative, research-intensive environment are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience working with postgraduate research students and working in Online/Blended Learning contexts is definitely an advantage.

Essential Qualifications

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in TESOL (or related field);
  • Experience working with university students (postgraduate research students preferred);
  • Experience working with ESOL students;
  • Relevant experience in the field of Academic English/Academic Literacies;
  • Demonstrated capacity or readiness for working in an online context (synchronous and asynchronous).
  • Experience in developing new course curricula;
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills;
  • Commitment to maintaining a collegial and inclusive work environment

Responsibilities of the Academic English Instructor position include:

  • Design and teach Academic English courses appropriate for postgraduate research students;
  • Teach in both online and offline (face-to-face) modes, using both synchronous (e.g., Zoom) and asynchronous (e.g., Moodle) Learning Environments;
  • Provide individual and small-group tutoring and other writing support;
  • Collaborate with GSE faculty to ensure student success in all courses and thesis work;
  • Plan and implement GSE professional development activities;
  • Participate in committees/general meetings at School and University levels;
  • Contribute to the wider Kazakhstani education community through scholarly/professional activities (e.g., publications/conferences/seminars)
