Interview Date: To be confirmed

As part of a major investment to expand its research and education in experimental physics, the University of Southampton wishes to make multiple new appointments at the Lecturer and/or Associate Professor level.

Applications are welcome from early career and established researchers in all areas of laboratory experimental physics, in particular

  • Quantum Technologies, where you can enjoy synergies with researchers working on a range of quantum computing and sensing components and systems, photonics and material science, underpinned by our EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering;
  • Physics for a Sustainable Future, including photovoltaics and sustainable energy, new routes to low power devices, and technological adaptations to climate change.

Both areas are supported by the University’s nanofabrication and characterization cleanrooms, our in-house ultrafast spectroscopy facility and preparation lab, specialist workshops, well-equipped laboratory space, and skilled technical support.

We are keen to encourage applications from early-career researchers, and offer mentor support to help develop and sustain your research and teaching. We take particular pride in the School’s collaborative team spirit and supportive culture, our record of cross-disciplinary collaboration across and beyond the physical sciences and engineering, and a history of fostering innovation and commercialization.

You should have a PhD in Physics or a related field, and several years’ post-doctoral experience, or equivalent relevant professional expertise. Your research record will reflect your national and international reputation, and you’ll share our collegiate approach to the work of the School. Some teaching experience would be useful, but as long as you’re enthusiastic about passing on your insights and knowledge, we’ll help you develop your educational skills.

In turn, we are keen to help all our staff achieve a healthy work-life balance, with flexible working hours (including part-time) and on-site childcare facilities. We are committed to tackling gender inequality, hold an Athena SWAN silver award and, as recognised by our Project Juno Champion status, are determined to address the under-representation of women in Physics. We offer a generous benefits package that includes a contributory pension scheme, competitive holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts.

To explore this exciting next step in your career, informal enquiries to the Head of our Quantum, Light & Matter Group, Dr Tim Freegarde (timf@soton.ac.uk), will be very welcome.

This position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis (part-time appointments are subject to negotiation).

When applying, please upload the following documents/statements:

  1. CV and publication list
  2. A statement outlining your research record in experimental physics (either in the application form or as a separate document)
  3. A statement outlining your experience of teaching or tutoring students, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level (either in the application form or as a separate document)
