Mansfield College, Oxford invites applications for a Fixed-Term Stipendiary Lectureship (four hours) in Philosophy for one year, from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025 to cover teaching needs created by the buyout of the Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy, Professor Paul Lodge.

Mansfield has the highest state sector intake among Oxford colleges, and regularly surpasses the targets the University has set for widening participation and increasing social mobility in undergraduate admissions. We value diversity and difference as necessary elements of a vibrant intellectual culture. Mansfield admits 8 students a year in PPE and up to 2 each year in Philosophy and Theology.

The duties of the post include: i) teaching four weighted hours a week (averaged over three eight-week terms) through a combination of tutorials and classes; ii) participation in the organisation and administration of PPE and Philosophy and Theology at the College in collaboration with the other PPE and Theology and Religion tutors. The successful candidate should have submitted, or be close to submitting, a doctorate in Philosophy. The successful candidate must be able to offer tutorials in General Philosophy (i.e., introductory metaphysics and epistemology), and (for second year and third year students) in Ethics, and two or more advanced Philosophy papers (including at least one of Knowledge and Reality or Plato’s Republic in translation).

See https://www.philosophy.ox.ac.uk/course-descriptions-finals for more details of the range of advanced papers). The ability to teach introductory logic would be an advantage.

The essential selection criteria for the advertised post are: relevant teaching experience in Philosophy; excellent skills as a tutor and communicator; willingness to undertake academic-related administration and to support the academic welfare of students; sympathy with Mansfield’s objectives as a College promoting widening participation in higher education.

The salary for the post is based on the Stipendiary Lecturers’ scale currently, £10,162 - £10,777 pa, depending on experience. The post carries full dining rights, (free meals provided in College) and the Lecturer will have a teaching room in College.

Applications, including an application covering letter addressing the essential selection criteria, a Curriculum Vitae and the names of two referees, should be sent by email to vacancies@mansfield.ox.ac.uk.  Candidates should also ask their referees to send letters of reference to this address by the closing date.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon, Friday 10 May 2024. Prospective candidates are welcome to contact Professor Paul Lodge paul.lodge@mansfield.ox.ac.uk with enquiries about the post.

It is hoped to hold interviews in the week beginning Monday 20 May 2024.
