About the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES)

Founded in 1915, SSEES is a world leading institution for research and teaching on Russia, the Baltics, and Central, Eastern and South-East Europe. The UCL SSEES student body numbers around 1000 students, divided between 650 undergraduate, 300 taught graduate, and 50 graduate research students. The School has an academic staff of some 45 professors, associate professors, and lecturers, 25 teaching fellows, many visiting fellows and project-based researchers and a dedicated team of professional services staff that provides valuable support to both our students and academic staff.

About the role

The SSEES School Manager is the senior Professional Services (PS) member of staff in SSEES. As such, they are responsible for providing leadership to their team and for ensuring that the PS service provided across, and to, SSEES is delivered in an efficient, responsive and professional manner, facilitating excellence in research, education, knowledge transfer and enterprise. The role will work closely with the Director of SSEES to develop and operationalise the School’s strategy in terms of short, medium and long-term planning as well as being responsible for budgetary management and the day-to-day operation and service provision of the School. They will also work closely with the DoO on Faculty and institutional activities as required, though it is to be noted that their priority focus will always be to SSEES. Within that, they will act as the SSEES representative on the Faculty PS Leadership Team. The post holder will ensure that statutory regulations, UCL and SSEE S policies and procedures are implemented and operated effectively.

About you

The successful candidate will have: - A proven track record in senior level administration and management within a HE or similar large, complex organisation. - Experience of effectively line managing and developing teams and individuals, including leading and embracing change. – Experience of maximising service delivery including when it is not via their own team - The ability to effectively organise and prioritise a varied and demanding workload, using methodical approaches, and paying close attention to detail. – The ability to provide support for data-driven, evidence based senior management decisions as part of a Leadership Team. - The ability to communicate on complex issues to other staff and students. - An understanding of the value of equality, diversity and inclusivity initiatives.
