The role

Northeastern University London invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Applied Biosciences. The appointee will help develop and deliver our UK undergraduate and postgraduate degree apprenticeship programmes and provide service to the discipline in line with the evolving needs and aspirations of the Faculty and University. Appointments will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and academic excellence.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of BSc Applied Biomedical Science, an Apprenticeship Degree programme for the Level 6 Clinical Trials Specialist apprenticeship. This programme is primarily delivered online through a combination of asynchronous learning materials and synchronous seminars. The role is suitable for hybrid working, provided the appointee is able to attend the London campus for face-to-face work as and when required.

Core duties include the development and teaching of cutting-edge courses in Applied Biosciences, both online and on campus, assessment and moderation, student support, peer review, etc. Indicative subject areas include Clinical Trials, Oncology, Drug Discovery, Biomanufacturing and Biological Sampling. Preference may be given to candidates with active interests in the relationship of Applied Biosciences to clinical trials, apprenticeships and online learning.

About the Faculty

The recently formed Faculty of Computing, Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences (CoMENS) is undergoing significant growth at Northeastern University London. It is home to four interdisciplinary undergraduate dual-degree (in UK and US) programmes in the areas of Data Science, Data Science and Politics, Computer Science and Business, and Computer Science and Philosophy; four postgraduate programs in the areas of AI Ethics, Data Science, Computer Science, and Technology Leadership; and five degree apprenticeship programmes in the areas of AI, Data Science, Digital and Technology Solutions, and Biosciences.

The Faculty plays a major part in Northeastern University’s first-year student mobility program, offering undergraduate courses in Computer and Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Healthcare, striving to inspire and equip entering students to be outstanding scientists.

The appointee will work in a multidisciplinary, cross-faculty team responsible for the degree apprenticeship programmes. The team uses innovative pedagogical approaches and best practices in digital education and collaboration to ensure an excellent learner experience for individuals or groups of learners, wherever they are based.

Person Specification Criteria

To undertake this role, the following should apply—should you not have the experience below, please do highlight where transferable skills would assist with you undertaking the role. Unless specified, all criteria are considered essential.

Qualifications

  • PhD completed, or near completion (all but dissertation), or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area
  • FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected (desirable)

Key Criteria

  • Demonstrates, through evidence, excellent ability to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in the role as advertised with regards to teaching and service
  • Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development in relation to institutionally strategic themes, including but not limited to technology, data, sustainability, and ethics
  • Ability to develop excellent educational provision in areas with significant appeal to students, including at postgraduate level, and with a focus on experiential learning
  • Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses, where appropriate in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines
  • Teaching competency in Applied Biosciences to Levels 4–7 (i.e., all undergraduate and postgraduate levels)
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills, both face-to-face and online
  • Excellent IT skills and evidence of supporting the integration of technologies into learning and teaching
  • Excellent time-management and organisational skills
