Applications are invited for a Postgraduate studentship, supported by HORIZON Europe Research and Innovation Actions to be undertaken within the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies at Aston University. The successful candidates will join an established Neuromorphic group working on advanced machine and deep machine-learning based signal processing elements under the general leadership of working directly with Drs Pedro Freire, Yaroslav Prylepskiy with the co-supervision of a senior industrial partner staff member (DATRIX, Spa).

Details of the Project
We are pleased to invite applicants at Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AIPT) for a three-year Postgraduate Research Studentship within the Horizon Europe Tools and Health framework (HORIZON-HLTH-2023-TOOL-05) in the project ‘Better real-world health-data distributed analytics research platform (BETTER, Grant agreement number:10113626)’. The successful applicant will be involved in evidence-based research on the following pathologies: Paediatric Intellectual Disability, Inherited Retinal Dystrophies and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Within those use cases innovative digital tools, technologies and methods will be studied, researched, and validated in real world scenarios. The applicant will benefit from close interaction and joint training events with the project Europe-leading industrial partners in medical data software design for health data analysis: DATRIX Spa (Italy), Rheasoft ApS (Denmark), Noosware Bv (The Netherland).
BETTER is seeking for candidates with exceptional skills and grades in data computer science and/or signal processing, with the knowledge of machine learning and/or some expertise in the areas related to big health data including genomics, imaging data analysis. Preferred skill requirements include experience in scientific programming and data computing, signal processing, statistical analysis. Knowledge of mathematical methods and numerical analysis are an asset.
The candidate will be asked to solve the machine learning problem and data science computing task.

Person Specification
The successful applicant should have been awarded, or expect to achieve, a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics (Theoretical/Applied), Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or another relevant subject, with a 60% or higher weighted average, and/or a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or an equivalent qualification from an overseas institution) in a relevant subject. Preferred skill requirements include experience in scientific programming and computing, data processing, statistical analysis. Knowledge of mathematical methods and numerical analysis are an asset. The candidate will have a strong drive to carry out the cutting-edge research for a doctoral degree.
