Job Summary 

The post of Research Assistant (pre-doctoral) or Research Associate (post-doctoral) will conduct research in stochastic optimisation models and algorithms for energy systems, as part of a bp-ICAM (International Centre for Advanced Materials) project on “Stochastic Optimisation for Long-Duration Energy Storage Systems” at the Department of Computing at Imperial College London. We will seek to develop stochastic optimisation formulations and solution methodologies for the design and operation of generic long-duration energy storage (LDES) systems. Specifically, we aim to account for uncertainties such as renewable intermittence, technology selection, capacity expansion, system operation, and market uncertainties, within the modelling and optimisation of LDES systems.

This project is in collaboration with the bp Advanced Energy Solutions (AES) team, and the modelling and optimisation capabilities will be developed alongside existing bp models. Given this arrangement, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to visit the bp team in London (bp innovation hub near Great Portland street) routinely, especially in the first several months. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will collaborate with Dr Calvin Tsay in the Department of Computing, Professor Nilay Shah in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and with the bp Advanced Energy Systems (AES) team. Furthermore, they will be member to the broader Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering at Imperial College London.

In addition to presenting research in top optimisation, chemical engineering, and/or energy venues, the Research Assistant/Associate will be expected to contribute towards developing, documenting, and maintaining optimisation software tools related to this project.

Essential requirements

  • A PhD (or be close to completion) in an area pertinent to the subject area, i.e. Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Energy Systems, Operations Research*.
  • A proven track record of publications in top conferences or journals in the field.
  • Experience in energy systems, mathematical optimisation, applied mathematics, and/or process systems engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of optimisation methods and implementations.
  • Experience writing and publishing academic papers.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant, salary range £41,694 - £44,888 per annum.
