Position Overview

Location: London, Devon House (St Katherines Dock) The role is suitable for hybrid working,provided the appointee is able to attend the campus (Devon House, London) for face-to-face work as and when required.

Term: Full-time, fixed-term (10 months)

Salary Range: £40,847 to £45,949 pa pro rata, progressing to £48,763 once in post

The role

Northeastern University London invites applications for a Lecturer in Biology. The appointee will be teaching undergraduate students and provide service to the discipline in line with the evolving needs and aspirations of the Faculty and University. Appointments will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and academic excellence.

Core duties will include preparation, teaching (both lectures and laboratory practicals) and assessment of courses in Biology, inspiring and equipping students to manage challenges in an ever-changing world. Indicative courses include general biology, with a focus on molecular and cellular biology, including basic biochemistry.

Candidates will be considered across all areas of Biology. We are especially seeking exceptional educators whose teaching contributes to fundamental undergraduate courses in Biology. Opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship abound: the Faculty’s grounding in humanics brings together computing, engineering and natural sciences with humanities based on ground-breaking research-oriented teaching practices.

About the Faculty

The recently formed Faculty of Computing, Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences (CoMENS) is undergoing significant growth at Northeastern University London. It is home to four interdisciplinary undergraduate dual-degree (in UK and US) programmes in the areas of Data Science, Data Science and Politics, Computer Science and Business, and Computer Science and Philosophy; four postgraduate programs in the areas of AI Ethics, Data Science, Computer Science, and Technology Leadership; and six degree apprenticeship programmes in the areas of AI, Data Science, Digital and Technology Solutions, Biosciences, and Clinical Trials.

The Faculty plays a major part in Northeastern University’s first-year student mobility program, offering undergraduate courses in Computer and Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Healthcare, striving to inspire and equip entering students to be outstanding scientists.

Person Specification Criteria

To undertake this role, the following should apply—should you not have the experience below, please do highlight where transferable skills would assist with you undertaking the role. Unless specified, all criteria are considered essential.

Qualifications

● Master’s degree, or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area

● PhD completed, or near completion (all but dissertation), or equivalent professional experience, in a relevant area (desirable)

● FHEA status, or equivalent, achieved or expected (desirable)

Key Criteria

● Demonstrates, through evidence, excellent ability to be adaptable, innovative, and inclusive in teaching

● Ability to develop excellent educational provision in areas with significant appeal to students with a focus on experiential learning

● Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development in relation to institutionally strategic themes, including but not limited to technology, data, sustainability, and ethics

● Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses

● Teaching competency in Biology to at least Level 6 (i.e., up to final year undergraduate level)

● Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills, both face-to-face and online

● Excellent IT skills and evidence of supporting the integration of technologies into learning and teaching

● Excellent time-management and organisational skills
