Project description:

The University of Southampton is expanding its PhD research in the area of Quantum Technology Engineering. In addition to the research project outlined below you will receive substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills.

Quantum Technologies present new challenges for manufacturing engineering. Southampton has been developing ultra-precision machining systems as a route to the scalable manufacture of atom and ion trap quantum systems. Using nanometre precision milling systems and diamond tools, we will machine wafer-based materials, such as silicon and glass, to create miniature vacuum cells for trapping clouds of atoms for quantum sensing or ions for quantum computing. The project will work with leaders in the field (academia and industry) to create these compact and robust vacuum systems with integrated photonic and electrical functionality. Together we will also develop the machines and processes to enable the growth of the quantum technology industry.

As a PhD candidate, you will gain hands-on experience in designing, modelling, and fabricating these systems and then testing your devices with our collaborators. Working with some of the world’s leading groups in Quantum Technology, you will demonstrate the application of your devices with state-of-the-art quantum sensors and computers. You will also benefit from comprehensive training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills, preparing you for a thriving future in career Quantum Technology Engineering.

This project offers the chance to work in a supportive, collaborative environment, alongside leading experts, and innovative peers. You'll emerge not just with a degree, but with skills and experiences that are highly valued in academia and industry.
