Job Summary

The Robot Vision Group and Software Performance Optimisation groups are two both part of the Department of Computing, Imperial College London. In close collaboration, we focus on forward looking research in robot vision, computer architecture and applied compiler technology, developing breakthrough capability in enabling robotic systems to efficiently understand their environments.

We are about to start a new EPSRC-funded project in partnership with the Universities of Manchester and Bristol on the topic of On-Sensor Vision. The goal is to develop new computational hardware, and the software tools and algorithms which support it, to enable a new level of powerful and efficient computer vision capability built directly into programmable camera chips. This could be crucial technology to unlock new applications where compact, efficient and robust cameras could be located in whole new locations and with whole new roles, in applications such as robotics.

Duties and Responsibilities

We are looking for two outstanding researchers who has the ability to take long term ownership and leadership of research projects within the two groups, working closely with the PIs and other colleagues in the lab to advance the state of the art in robotic vision driven by efficient compiler technologies. We expect the researcher to publish and be visible at the top international venues in robotics, machine learning, computer vision, and systems.

This position also presents the opportunity to pursue a PhD in an area consistent with the objectives of the On-Sensor Computer Vision project; such predoctoral candidates must have strong relevant skills and be accepted onto the Department’s Doctoral programme.

Essential requirements

  • Research Associate: A PhD (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area, such as computer vision and/or robotics or software optimisation.
  • Research Assistant: A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area, such as computer vision and/or robotics or software optimisation.
  • A strong background in modern 3D computer vision and/or compilers and computer architecture.
  • A demonstrable interest and track record in the practical software skills which enable high performance real-time applications.
  • An outstanding record of international publications, or similar evidence of research capability appropriate to career stage.
  • Demonstrable skills in building and engineering high-quality research software, in at least some of: compilers, computer architecture, hardware design and simulation, working systems in robotics and/or computer vision, preferably with a real-time emphasis
