We are excited to invite applications for a Research Fellow (Veterinary Vaccine and Diagnostics development) position funded by the EU, as part of a new European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare (European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare - Home (eupahw.eu). The EUP AH&W is an EU-funded programme aimed at controlling infectious diseases of animals and promoting animal welfare. The programme involves 90 entities from 24 countries (research-performing institutions, funding organizations, and ministries) including the European Food and Safety Authority and the European Medicines Agency.

The position will be based in the School of Biosciences at the University of Surrey, but it will involve working closely with colleagues in the School of Veterinary Medicine. You will be part of a team in a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment with a strong international reputation.  

The role

The main focus of the project will be to develop novel bacterial vaccines and diagnostics for livestock and poultry pathogens/AMR in collaboration with colleagues in the PAHW. 

You will be a member of the La Ragione Research group and an important member of a research team focused on understanding the pathogenesis and control of endemic bacterial diseases of livestock and poultry. The the project will run in parallel with BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC, AHRC, EU and commercially funded projects in the areas of bacterial host-microbe interactions, novel interventions and AMR. 

About you

You should have a:

  • Relevant PhD (or be near completion), in addition to holding an undergraduate degree in biological sciences, veterinary medicine a related life-science subject. 
  • Strong background in microbiology, comparative genomics, and molecular biology with experience of diagnostics/vaccine development. 
  • Successful track record of working independently and as part of a team.

About us

You will be based in the School of Biosciences, but will also work in the School of Veterinary Medicine. You will be part of a rapidly growing and dynamic department and part of a wider Faculty network of scientists. The post holder may be required to travel in the UK and abroad and work closely with colleagues in industry.

Four-Day On-Campus Commitment: All new staff are expected to be physically present on campus for a minimum of four days each week during their initial four to six months of employment. The duration will vary depending on the individual with minimum duration being 4 months and maximum duration being 6 months. This requirement is adjusted on a pro-rata basis for part-time staff members. For those on remote contract, a separate programme of on-campus commitment is being developed.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£34,980) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£36,024).
