A world-class drama school and educational charity, LAMDA – the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art – delivers exceptional vocational training in the performing arts. LAMDA’s core aim is to train and develop the best artists regardless of social or financial background. The Academy is at an exciting time in its evolution, paving the way for drama school training in the 21st century and developing multi-skilled creative artists and technicians. In order to ensure that its work is accessible to all, LAMDA is passionately committed to widening participation and operates a robust scholarship scheme, awarding significant support to one in five full-time students each year.
The Role
A newly created role has arisen within the Drama school, where we are seeking an Associate Tutor (Movement Awareness).
You will be teaching awareness through movement using slow, mindful movements to achieve powerful effects in terms of strength, flexibility, and holistic integration of body and mind whilst providing a safe and inclusive environment that supports all of our students in their learning and development. The Movement Awareness Associate Tutor will tie directly into functional movements for actors inspired by daily life, such as walking efficiently, safely lifting objects, and improving one’s posture in sitting or standing. Movement Awareness classes always have a goal to be accessible to all and develop into applied movement awareness, facilitating and making clear the relationship between awareness, expression and creative risk-taking for actors.
It is essential that you have certification and experience in one or several experiential anatomy somatic practices, along with experience in working with professional actors and actors in training.
LAMDA offers a curriculum working with the Feldenkrais Method® for actors, and we give preference to Feldenkrais practitioners with experience in working with actors. We are also open to meeting practitioners whose practice includes other somatic methods that can achieve the above-mentioned goals. In addition, your awareness practice, experience in other somatic practices like expressive movement for actors (Lecoq, Grotowski, pure movement), dramatic acrobatics, dance, fight, and intimacy is very welcome as complementary to the Movement Awareness teaching in specific and the Movement department in general.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to stimulate and encourage a commitment to learning in others, as well as expertise in the part of the curriculum to be taught and the scholarship associated with it. Furthermore, you will have some experience of delivering teaching and/or training to actors, be a collaborative team player and contribute to innovation in the field of actor movement training.
LAMDA’s Movement department is constantly looking for working beyond best practice, encouraging its team to contribute to our collective research in pedagogy of movement for actors, ensemble, inclusive practice, anti-racist practice, ecology, intimacy, fight and future technologies. We are interested in employing practitioners whose research aims and values align with ours.
In this fractional 0.8 FTE role, you will work 29.5 hours per week, Monday to Saturday (9.15 am – 5.30 pm), plus evening and weekend work as and when necessary.
