About us

Research in the Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) focuses on building a science of cities from a multidisciplinary base, drawing on cutting edge methods and ideas in modelling, complexity, visualisation and computation. This is related to the pursuit of solutions to the grand challenges that affect our cities such as climate change, housing and economic development. Our current mix of architects, planners, geographers, mathematicians, physicists, transport engineers, and computer scientists make CASA a unique and world-leading unit within the Faculty of the Built Environment at UCL.

About the role

This role is part of the ENHANCE project – a Driving Urban Transitions European consortium project investigating the application of the 15 Minute City concept for improving transport sustainability in outer metropolitan areas and small cities. The main research tasks will be quantitative spatial and behavioural analysis, including accessibility analysis using GIS and network analysis tools; and travel behaviour analysis using travel diary and census data, with a particular focus on active travel (walking and cycling). The role requires working closely with academics at the Centre of Advanced Spatial Analysis UCL, as well as collaborating with academic partners in the Netherlands and Portugal, and societal partners in UK city government. The post is available from 01.07.24, on a part-time basis (0.5FTE/ 18.25 hours per week) and is funded until 22.12.25 in the first instance. The appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B and starting salary offered will be in the ra nge of £37,332 - £39,980 pro rata, per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

About you

The postholder will have a master’s degree in a relevant discipline, for example geography, GIS, transportation, data science, sustainability, computer science, engineering. They will also have the ability to conduct quantitative research in the field of sustainable urban transport; knowledge of a programming language for reproducible spatial data analysis and modelling (e.g. Python, R, or other relevant approach); general understanding of urban spatial data, and ability to manipulate and visualise this data using GIS or similar data science software and good knowledge of research challenges in sustainable transport and urban planning.
