The role
An exciting opportunity is available for a Technician to join the School of Geographical Sciences. This new post will work with the current technical team (consisting of 5 technicians) across both the Teaching and Research laboratory platforms in the School, contributing analytical skills to both the teaching programme, including national and international field trips, and research contracts. Their work will involve close liaison with Physical Geography undergraduate students and academic staff, as well as external organisations where appropriate.
What will you be doing?
Working in the School’s Teaching Lab, during term-time (0.6 FTE), the Technician will support teaching activities by providing analytical support and training in relevant techniques and processes. The Technician will work closely with undergraduate students, preparing for and supporting lab and field-based practicals (e.g. making reagents and preparing equipment for taught laboratory classes & fieldtrips) and providing analytical support to project-based experimental work (e.g. nutrient and carbon analysis, gas and ion chromatography, elemental and metals analysis). The post holder will be involved in the upkeep of the lab space and field equipment, ensuring that all instrumentation is maintained and used according to the correct procedures, compliant with good health and safety practice. Outside term time (remaining 0.4 FTE) the Technician will be supporting analytical work carried out in the School’s Research Labs for externally funded analytical service contracts. Typical duties will include calibrating, operating and maintaining analytical equipment, carrying out analytical techniques (listed above) and recording data outputs.
You should apply if
The successful candidate will have a relevant qualification at GCSE, or NVQ level 2/3, or equivalent level, plus proven experience of working in a Physical Geography/Environmental Sciences lab and field environment. The candidate will demonstrate a proactive approach, creativity and initiative and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required, as is the ability to take a positive and flexible approach to work in order to deal with a variety of requests and tasks. A full driving licence applicable to the UK is desirable for this post as the role holder will be required to drive for field work activities and the movement of equipment between different laboratory spaces.
