Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy

The above full-time post is available on a fixed term basis from 1st Aug 2024 for 42 months.

The Faculty wishes to recruit a PDRF to support the work of Professor Euan Hendry in THz metamaterials. This post is available immediately for a period of 3.5 years. The successful applicant will join META-4D: a new EPSRC programme aimed at developing four dimensional metamaterials, i.e. not only in the usual three dimension in space but also in time (https://news.exeter.ac.uk/top-stories/research-to-build-next-generation-of-metamaterials-receives-multi-million-pound-funding-boost/). The goal of this partnership, which builds upon a successful relationship between the University of Exeter, Imperial College and Kings College, is to develop advanced materials that can be used to control and manipulate electromagnetic and acoustic energy in a highly tailored, bespoke fashion.

This EPSRC funded post is available from August for 42 months. The successful applicant will join Exeter’s Centre for Metamaterials Research and Innovation (https://www.exeter.ac.uk/research/metamaterials/), and will focus on the design and implementation of novel time varying metamaterials for the generation and manipulation of THz radiation using all-optical modulation techniques. The research will include aspects of optics and imaging, control and instrumentation programming, and ultrafast laser measurement. As such, the applicant should have a strong background in optics, while experience using ultrafast lasers and/or THz time domain spectroscopy would be beneficial.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to research grant writing; and make presentations at international conferences. Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study, should be a nationally recognised authority in optics, THz spectroscopy or metamaterials, and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
