The Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell (MLC) https://www.har.mrc.ac.uk/ is located in an expanding science and innovation park in Oxfordshire and is an internationally renowned centre at the forefront of genetics research. 

About the Role:

We have an opportunity for Phenotyping Technicians to join our team in the MLC, working across several different research projects to provide high-quality animal husbandry, procedures and research data.

Animal models are becoming more sophisticated and are being used for ever more in-depth procedures, as such we are expanding our team to meet these demands. We are looking for people with a variety of experience, including practical laboratory skills, knowledge and experience of imaging techniques such as ultrasound or bioluminescence/fluorescence, or the ability to conduct observational and behavioural tasks.  Experience in one or more of these skills is essential however, we have an extensive training programme that you will be able to access to be trained in other areas.

Candidates should have a love of animals and an ability to handle them with care and attention during procedures.

You will work to ensure that all procedures are carried out in line with the Home Office licensing (The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, amended 2012), and that meticulous records are kept of all animal-related work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide procedural services; this will include a variety of procedures such as intravenous dosing, taking blood samples, imaging and behavioural phenotyping
  • Data quality checking and troubleshooting
  • Analysis of imaging data; for example, quantification of fluorescence or measurements from ultrasound images
  • Checking the health and welfare of experimental mouse stocks and addressing their welfare needs
  • Computerised record keeping
  • Reading and adhering to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments
  • Working weekends on a rota basis

Additional Information:

You must be willing to work overtime to cover animal requirements.

About You:

  • You will have 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above and have suitable numerical skills
  • You should have experience of working in a laboratory environment, including working to SOPs and risk assessments
  • A genuine interest in the welfare of animals is essential
