We are recruiting a post-doctoral research scientist (fixed term, 12 months) to join an expanding genetic and functional genomics group at the Royal Veterinary College (https://sites.google.com/view/psifidigroup/home) and to work on a highly prevalent disorder of cats. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common heritable heart disease in humans and cats- affecting ~15% of cats. HCM is characterised by primary left-ventricular myocardial hypertrophy and is associated with increased risk of congestive heart failure, aortic thromboembolism and sudden cardiac death. The prevalence of HCM and lack of treatments to modify the disease process demonstrates the importance of studies aiming to understand the genetic architecture and underlying mechanisms of HCM susceptibility in order to develop better tests for early identification of cats at risk, and a better understanding of factors driving disease onset to better manage the disease. To date there are limited feline HCM genomic studies and only 5 HCM-associated causative genetic variants. This project aims to address this issue and dissect the genomic architecture of feline HCM by generating and comparing multi-omics data of HCM cases and controls. Based at the RVC, the post-holder will implement Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) and total RNA Sequencing in myocardial samples from affected cats and controls which will integrate with already generated Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) data to prioritise single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for further validation. The post-holder will join a multidisciplinary team linking researchers at the RVC with UCL, University of Edinburgh, and industry. The project will provide the opportunity for the successful candidate to travel to international scientific conferences and meet with international collaborators. This post will require a postdoctoral scientist who is experienced in wet lab and next generation sequencing analysis. Previous experience of working in a veterinary context will be advantageous, but not essential.

We are looking for candidates with a PhD qualification in animal genomics/bioinformatics/biotechnology. Detailed below are the job description, person specifications and qualifications listing the essential and desirable requirements for the post, which will be used as the basis for the shortlisting.

We offer a generous reward package including:

Competitive and attractive pension package

  • Generous 30 days annual leave (plus bank holidays and concessionary days) pro-rata
