We are seeking a Linux Systems Administrator within the dynamic IT and Scientific Computing Team here at CRUK Manchester Institute.  The successful applicant will work with internal and external partners to design and set up Linux virtual machines and Linux containers and help administer a virtualisation infrastructure used for scientific data processing, analysis and archiving at the Institute. 

About the role:

The mission of the IT and Scientific Computing team is to provide solutions for reproducible computational research that covers the entire data analysis lifecycle. The purpose of this role is to provide IT services, support and technologies and integrate them into existing infrastructures to accomplish this mission. 

You will be interacting with the IT team to set up and operate new IT services. This encompasses designing Linux VMs (CentOS, Rocky Linux) and containers in close collaboration with partners to provide application, web, database, and data management services. You will integrate, services into the Institute's user authentication, storage and High-Performance Computing infrastructure as required. The Institute is currently procuring a new enterprise Virtualisation platform. This role includes providing cover for operating the virtual server farm and AD-based user management under the supervision of the IT manager. 

As our Linux Systems Administrator you will be a visible presence within the Institute, providing professional and timely IT services. Whilst this role is focused on being a visible and operational support to the Institute, there will be lots of opportunity to work on projects and be influential in shaping our future IT and Scientific Computing strategy. 

About you:

You should be educated to degree level in computer science or related subject (or have equivalent relevant experience) and have extensive experience in administering different types of Linux servers along with experience with different Linux distributions, virtualisation infrastructures, user management (AD) and the ability to write scripts. Experience in designing, managing, and creating Linux containers is required. 

You will have excellent communication skills together with a proven ability to work both independently and effectively within a team. Meticulous documentation of changes and processes is essential. An awareness of biology and/or previous experience working with scientific researchers is beneficial.
