Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 31st May 2024
Closes: 20th June 2024

Pembroke College wishes to appoint a full-time College Lecturer and Junior Research Fellow in History, from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2026. We welcome applicants with expertise in any area of European or Global History: 1400-1750. We have a large, lively History community and you will be mentored by senior academics and have a key role in guiding Pembroke’s History students.

This post offers an early career researcher the opportunity to gain experience in teaching and administration, while actively pursuing their own research. This is a full-time post, but expressions of interest in the role on a part-time basis will be considered.

Teaching

All college teaching is in small groups, and you will mostly deliver tutorial teaching to undergraduate pairs, with some teaching in classes of four or five, including revision classes. Applicants should make clear which parts of the syllabus they would be able to teach in their application. Details of the undergraduate history courses can be found here.

Your teaching will be distributed across the year, with six hours per week average contact time for the eight weeks of each term.

The postholder may be asked to act as an advisor for graduate students reading for Masters courses in History.

Administration

You will have the opportunity to direct the studies of a year group of historians and will be expected to play a leading role in the admissions process and the running of History at Pembroke.

Research

We expect you to undertake independent research; this is a full-time post and the responsibilities above should allow you to devote 0.5 fte to your own research.

The successful candidate should have a doctorate, or be very near completion. Selection criteria are (a) an excellent research record and plan for research during this fellowship (b) relevant undergraduate teaching and administrative experience (c) ability to provide pastoral oversight of undergraduates.

The salary will be £34,650 per annum. This is a fixed term post to provide an opportunity for an early career academic to undertake research and gain experience of teaching and academic administration. The successful post-holder will benefit from a research allowance of £1,670 per annum, and lunches and dinners in College throughout the year. All figures are 2023-24 rates and subject to uplift.

This is a College vacancy and the terms and conditions of the post are available at https://www.pmb.ox.ac.uk/work-with-us along with the Further Particulars. University Terms and Conditions do not apply. Applicants should submit their curriculum vitae, a research plan of one page, and a covering letter electronically to the Academic HR Officer (academichr@pmb.ox.ac.uk) by 12 noon BST on 20 June 2024. Please specify the role you are applying for in the subject line of your email. You should also provide the names and contact details of two referees; to be taken up for short listed candidates only. Interviews are planned for the week commencing 15 July 2024.
