Postdoc in Multi-Scale Multi-Physics Simulation of Gas-Atomization-based Spray Forming of Metals – DTU Construct  

You are invited for a two-year Postdoc position in the field of advanced numerical simulation of the gas atomization-based spray forming process. The position is part of the REVIVE project titled “Scaling high-value steel recycling through digitalized Spray Forming and local closed-loop ecosystems” carried out at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. 

The position focuses on developing accurate numerical simulations and multi-scale models for spray forming including the gas atomization stage and the subsequent deposition of the material and the so-called ingot formation. 

The developed models will be validated against experiments designed by the consortium behind the project. The idea is to hand over a reduced-order version of the multiphysics model to the process operators, thereby serving as a tool for optimizing the part quality and the process. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your objectives as a postdoc are listed below: 

  • Development of a steady-state tundish casting model using thermohydraulic simulation to predict temperature and height changes of molten metal
  • Multi-physics simulation of atomization using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study primary and secondary breakage of liquid streams
  • Multi-scale simulation of the deposition during spray forming to model the growth of the ingot, study the effect of process parameters, and develop a reduced-order model (ROM) of the entire process. 

You have documented experience within the following fields: computational fluid mechanics, computational heat transfer and two-phase flows. 

In addition to the direct project-related research, you will conduct teaching-related activities, disseminate your research through the publication of papers in high-ranking journals and attend conferences. 

We envision that: 

  • You have an open mind and can think creatively in a thermo-fluid, computational and programming context.
  • You are eager to elaborate on the newest research results, improve the ideas and test them by implementation.
  • You have experience within CFD as well as computational heat transfer from either developing your own codes and/or the use of commercial software packages such as OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent or Flow-3D. 

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
