Are you interested in working at a world leading national research facility?

Would you like to work within a multidisciplinary team of biologists, physicists and chemists in industry and academia?

Are you interested in developing a new set of tools that can be used to image metals, metabolites and proteins in cells at unprecedented spatial resolution?

Are you interested in applying these tools to help understand diseases like tuberculosis, cancer and diabetes?

The Surrey Ion Beam Centre is an exciting, multi-disciplinary facility with an outstanding international reputation.  We employ biologists, chemists, engineers and physicists and have a strong research culture.  We provide tools that are used all over the world to analyse many types of samples, including cancer cells, tissues, solar cells, meteorites and batteries.  We are working with IonOptika to build a new, internationally unique system for imaging cells and tissues using both keV and MeV ion beams, mass spectrometry, X-ray spectrometry and backscattered particle analysis.  This system will help us and our collaborators optimise drug delivery and wound healing and improve the treatment of diseases like diabetes, tuberculosis and cancer.

The aim of this PhD project is to develop the first analytical methods to do this and we are looking for a chemist, physicist or biologist with an interest in multidisciplinary bioanalytical science to work with us on this studentship.

Supervisors:  Professor Melanie BaileyDr Catia CostaProfessor Paul Townsend and Professor Roger Webb
