The School of Physics & Astronomy is a flourishing member of the Faculty of Science at the University of Nottingham. We are committed to excellence and innovation in teaching and research and run one of the most popular undergraduate degree programmes in the country. The School has more than 60 research active members of academic staff all of whom are closely involved in teaching, and more than 40 support staff who keep the School’s laboratories running smoothly, maintain the School computing facilities and administer the courses.

You will provide technical and practical support for the School's 1st Year Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory and will be part of a small team of technicians responsible for providing overall support for the School's teaching operation.

Duties will include: the preparation of laboratory classes and the provision of technical assistance to staff and students; the maintenance and repair of laboratory experiments; assisting in the maintenance of the laboratories PC’s; the provision of general laboratory administration, including attendance monitoring and recording of marks; the preparation of outreach activities and involvement in the School’s extensive outreach programme, in and away from the School; supporting the more general requirements of the School’s teaching activity e.g. audio-visual support, lecture demonstrations, registration and open days.

You must have a minimum of HNC or equivalent in a relevant subject, plus significant work experience in a relevant role, or substantial work experience in a relevant role. Emphasis will be placed on an appreciation of the Physics scientific field/ specialism in the area of work, and an ability to interact positively with laboratory users, including explaining experimental principles and encouraging engagement. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information effectively is essential, and knowledge and experience of PC hardware and software is desirable.

This is a fixed-term, full-time (36.25 hours per week) post available for 12 months. Job share arrangements may be considered.
