Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join The Thorne Lab at Imperial studying the interactions between emerging viruses and our frontline defence against infection, the intracellular innate immune system. This network of pathogen sensors and effector proteins acts as a universal surveillance and defence system, which all viruses must overcome to infect. Our goal is to understand how viruses do this at the molecular level and how this links to transmission, pandemic potential and pathogenesis. This is key to understanding which viruses pose the most risk for future pandemics. Through studying and comparing virus-host interactions, we also seek to reveal novel opportunities for therapeutic intervention to limit virus replication and inflammation, and to use viruses as discovery tools to uncover new knowledge of cell biology and innate immune regulation.

Our goal is to understand mechanisms of innate immune sensing and viral evasion and antagonism using SARS-CoV-2 as a model system. We discovered that SARS-CoV-2 emerged armed with the ability to effectively overcome the human innate immune system, and that highly transmissible variants of concern evolved to get even better at this. We aim to discover and compare viral protein functions across SARS-CoV-2 variants, coronaviruses, and more broadly across other emerging viruses, to understand the underlying mechanisms and molecular features associated with pandemic virus emergence and evolution. We are currently particularly focussed on understanding how SARS-CoV-2 manipulates host gene expression in response to infection through direct interaction with epigenetic and transcriptional regulators. The project will be in this area, taking into account your interests and experience with a view to taking the most tractable approaches to making important, impactful discoveries.
