The Role

We are seeking an excellent academic to join our staff as an Assistant Professor in English for Academic Purposes. The primary aim for this post will be to oversee and contribute to the English language component of the degree programmes in in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the Maynooth University International Engineering College (MIEC) that is situated in Fuzhou, China. In addition to teaching commitments, there will be a notable emphasis on administrative responsibilities, such as curriculum development and the training of EAP Tutors and Language Assistants. Ideally, the candidate will have a portfolio whose teaching and research is centered on English for Academic Purposes; English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) and English-Medium Education (EME); TESOL; or second-language pedagogy, as it relates to English. The position will be based at both Maynooth University campus in Ireland and the Maynooth International Engineering College in Fuzhou China. The successful applicant will be required to spend a significant amount of their time at the MIEC. Whilst at Maynooth University, campus academic support will be provided through an affiliation with the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, which already is playing a significant consultative role to the MIEC.
The appointee will be expected to sustain and conduct research, engage in scholarship of quality and substance, and generate publications of an international standard. The appointees will be expected to build a strong research profile that supports Maynooth University’s research strategy, including affiliating to its research institutes, where appropriate, and working with colleagues on national and international research projects. The candidate will be expected to seek and, where feasible, facilitate links between research activities in Maynooth University and Fuzhou University.
The MIEC provides substantial financial assistance for the faculty members teaching in Fuzhou. In addition, a professional programme (project) management team provides operational support to faculty, both in Ireland and China. The University and the department have also established mechanisms and funding to assist faculty in building their research profile.
