We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant/Associate.
We are seeking an ecologist to lead efforts in measuring the effects of environmental disturbance on the condition, physiology, and vital rates of migratory wildebeest.
You will contribute/make a leading contribution to a NERC funded project titled “Revealing the hidden effects of anthropogenic disturbance on the spatiotemporal dynamics of animal populations”, working with Prof Grant Hopcraft, Prof Colin Torney, Prof Juan Morales and Prof Neil Evans at the University of Glasgow. The aim of this project is to relate empirical individual-based data to population responses, particularly to meet the challenges in evaluating scenarios of different climate, management or intervention strategies.
The successful candidate will oversee field studies that include the deployment of LoRa-enabled GPS collars with accelerometers, collection and export of samples for isotope and hormone analysis and use non-invasive methods to measure body condition. The candidate will relate these metrics of activity and condition to survival and reproduction rates. They will spend approximately 16 weeks of each year at our field station in Serengeti National Park, Tanzania with the remainder of time at the University of Glasgow (likely as 2 separate trips each year).
The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.
This position is full time and funded until 30th June 2026.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Grant Hopcraft Grant.Hopcraft@glasgow.ac.uk
