The Technical Team in the School of Life and Medical Sciences supports a wide and diverse range of subjects including Biosciences, Pharmacy, Sports Science, Psychology, and Geography, Environment and Planning. Highly skilled technical staff are organized into small specialist teams, who work together alongside academic and research staff.
Main duties and responsibilities
You will manage the technical team and laboratories in pharmaceutical and analytical chemistry, supporting teaching, research and commercial activities. You will work directly with students, supporting practical classes, student project work, workshops, short courses, and researchers, as well as supporting consultancy and contract work. You will manage a small team of approximately 5 staff, working closely with other specialist technical teams within the School.
You will manage the safe procurement, storage, use and disposal of hazardous and regulated substances within the area, ensuring that adequate records are maintained. You will be responsible for the maintenance and servicing of pharmaceutical and analytical equipment within the area and provide specialist advice on the procurement of new equipment.
You will advise on health and safety within the area, and ensure that legislation, regulation and safe practices and process are adhered to.
Skills and experience required
You will have substantial proven experience of working in a laboratory, research or consultancy environment in a chemistry or pharmaceutical discipline in a technical role. You will also have experience of managing or supervising technical staff, as well as a range of resources relevant to the area. Experience of managing a budget would be an advantage.
You will have experience of managing health and safety in a Science context.
You will have an ability to act independently and as part of a team. An ability to deal with conflicting priorities and work under pressure will also be needed.
You will be flexible to team and workload requirements, adaptable and reliable with a proactive approach which is methodical with attention to detail.
Qualifications required
An HND/degree/NVQ Level 4 in a chemistry, pharmaceutical science or similar, or equivalent in-service experience and education.
An IOSH Managing Safely qualification, or similar is also required.
