A position exists for Senior Research Associate in the Department of Engineering's Whittle Laboratory on the West Cambridge site (Cambridge, UK), to work on the Aviation Impact Accelerator project.
Climate neutral aviation is possible. However, there is no silver bullet and to achieve it a whole system approach is required considering technology, scaleup, infrastructure, investment, and policy. The Aviation Impact Accelerator is an international group of academics and practitioners drawing on a broad range of expertise assembled by the University of Cambridge, to develop an interactive, evidence-based tool to engage decision makers and the wider public in a discussion on the pathways to net zero flight.
Key responsibilities and duties include: investigating technologies for climate neutral aviation; contributing to academic and popular outputs including articles and papers; developing system models of aviation; working closely with AIA team and external partners; building internal and external contacts and participating in networks for the exchange of information and future collaboration; planning and managing your own research activity in collaboration with others; contributing to the planning of joint research led by the principal investigator.
Candidates need a PhD in a relevant subject area. We are looking for postdoctoral researchers with significant and proven experience in a range of areas including aircraft design, engine design, fuel production and distribution, aviation operations or climate modelling. The ideal candidate would have an interest in working with people across the multidisciplinary AIA team. We will also be looking for candidates who are self-motivated and have good communication skills.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on a unique and important initiative to accelerate the transition to net-zero aviation within the next 20-30 years.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
