The University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant/Associate in Astrophysics within the School of Physics & Astronomy to contribute to/make a leading contribution to research in the growing area of gravitational wave cosmology within the Institute for Gravitational Research. The researcher will work together with Dr. Rachel Gray, Dr. Chris Messenger, Dr. Christopher Berry, and Prof. Martin Hendry. This research involves the development of data analysis tools to infer the cosmological properties of the universe using gravitational wave compact binary coalescence events. The research focus will be on developments to improve cosmological inference using LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration detections during the A+ era. Aspects of the work will include (depending on the specialities of the researcher): the use of large-scale galaxy surveys for cosmological inference; the application of machine learning techniques to solve challenges in gravitational wave cosmology; the impact of astrophysical distribution assumptions on cosmological inference; the inclusion of electromagnetic counterpart data into hierarchical cosmological inferences. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.
To be considered for an appointment at Grade 7, you must be able to perform the duties as listed for a Research Assistant position with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, collaborating and publishing research, and mentoring colleagues. You must also have, or be about to obtain, a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
For informal enquiries or further information about the project, please contact Dr. Rachel Gray (Rachel.Gray@glasgow.ac.uk), Dr. Chris Messenger (Christopher.Messenger@glasgow.ac.uk) or Dr. Christopher Berry (Christopher.Berry.2@glasgow.ac.uk)
